With a Slingbox, you know you will be able to watch all of the games on all the channels you subscribe to, on your tablet, smartphone or laptop – without extra monthly fees. Please try again later.Ricky T1.0 out of 5 starsI loved this product, until…February 6, 2014I have been using this for several months. I got an email from Sling asking me to write a review to post on their web site. Here is the review I posted:’Not as great as I expected. I bought my first slingbox (the solo) about 10 years ago. It was such a great device then, and continues to be a great device today. I bought the 350 in order to step up to a higher quality picture. What I ended up with was a marginally improved picture, with an absolutely terrible web interface player. It’s always been pretty bad, but now with the 350 I can no longer use the desktop software. It was so much better than the web based plugin, plus it seems as if I have to update the plugin every time I use it, which just takes forever. The Chrome plugin is buggy, and doesn’t work well within a multi-monitor setup. When you make it full screen, you can’t see your mouse cursor on the other monitor. I reported this bug months ago and Sling has yet to fix the issue. What also drives me nuts is that on the iPad player, when I’m at home, it absolutely never automatically selects the right quality. I always have to manually select it even though it’s on auto mode. The player also seems to auto change the aspect of the video signal both on the web and iPad. If you compare the picture to what’s on the actual TV, some pictures are perfect, and others you can tell are squished or stretched. Would I recommend this device? Yeah, especially at the price. It’s just not as good as I expected.’A couple days later I got an email from Sling saying: ‘Your review has been moderated. It cannot be published to the web site, but… Our staff has read your review and values your contribution even though it did not meet all our website guidelines. Thanks for sharing, and we hope to publish next time!’It didn’t meet their guidelines because it’s not a hugely positive review. Sling Media is attempting to make their product look better on their site than it actually is. They will obviously only publish 5 star glowing reviews. So now, I’m posting terrible reviews on every web site I can. Thanks for being a great company, Sling. Thanks for contacting me and asking what you could do to make my experience better. Thanks for taking the time to actually fix the problems that exist in your product. Oh wait… you didn’t do any of those things.Read more 1,399 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseJoel A.1.0 out of 5 starsIf you don’t mind watching ad wrapped video for a product you own this is what you needMarch 24, 2015Verified Purchase3/24/2015Well sling has changed the the desktop player to show with ads. This ‘feature’ already existed in the web viewer which was annoying enough. This is a huge problem as the redesigned updated desktop player has much less screen real estate to show the actual show you are trying to watch. The larger problem is this is a device you have to pay for and now you are bombarded with adchoice ads (mine aren’t even presented in my native language) This is completely unacceptable and a bait and switch. I paid a premium price to watch my own content ‘anywhere’ with no additional cost and now they are pasting ads everywhere to reduce my viewing experience and gain additional revenue. Pretty shady practice.–edited for content 3/24/2015Read more 23 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseMcGanskiRules1.0 out of 5 starsIgnore the positive reviews DO NOT BUY!!!!November 11, 2015Verified PurchaseDo Not Buy!!!!Bought this a little over a year ago. Refused to pay the 15 bucks for the iphone apps but that was ok – only needed if for outside on gameday and in our workout room. Worked great for the remainder of the ’14 football season. Went to use it this past summer (’15) and was bombarded with ads. Forced me to install a plugin that disabled the ad free interface I had previously, and inserted ads at startup, and put banner ads on the right side of the screen and the bottom. Takes up a ton of space until you can get it fullscreen – which you can’t do until you get past the first fullscreen ad.I’ve dealt with it an co-miserated with other owners of these devices but to two things happened today. 1. I read an interview with head of the company trying to justify the new business model including the the ad insertions. Complete BS. It’s not a free model. We pay hundreds for the boxes. We pay for the connection to the boxes (internet connection & cabling) we’re paying for the phone and tablet apps at 15 bucks a pop which btw is just adding insult to injury after shelling out hundreds for the hardware to get this working in the first place, and if we opt for the free ones they’re riddled with ads, and, we’re watching the ads placed in the content by the channels we’re watching. Most importantly, this was a new addition to reduce the functionality of the product after at least a year after ownership. Imagine buying a new Audi last year, only to find out this past sunday that every time you walk out to your car to go to work, and start it, you’re subjected to a thirty second ad that you cannot skip past and are forced to watch. I understand the slingbox doesn’t cost 45 grand but it’s a premium product that you expect to run for free after an initial outlay of cash for the hardware. That’s what we were sold, simple. The insertion of ads after the fact, and forcing you to use their connectivity service instead of good old port forwarding right to your IP address is just plain greedy.Insert cuisinart for audi if you have a huge problem with it and imagine sitting there for 30 seconds every time you want to shred some carrots. The ad incensed me but what was worse was a few minutes ago I went to sign in to watch a few minutes at the beginning of a show and was forced to sit through a full 30 second John Hancock commercial – the one with the adult couple trying to get the old father to move in with them – that I could not skip past. Not only will I never buy another sling product – or anything that I know any member of this management team moves onto after their inevitable bankruptcy, but I’ll never use any of Hancock’s financial services. Seriously. I’m not exaggerating. It’s all that companies seem to understand these days. I’ll never buy a Chevy truck from Copeland Chevrolet during Truck Month. Whoever they are and wherever they’re located, and Elle Goulding Unstaged tonight at 8pm EST on amexunstaged dot com?? No thanks – wasn’t a fan anyway and it’s 11:31 EST – my god – who creates your ad content??? Matter of fact it’s made the decision to rip up those constant amex card pre-approval offers that come in the mail that much easier.Yes – these are all references to ads I’ve seen while typing this on the other monitorWhat I find hardest to believe are the positive reviews of this product and the 3+ star ratings. Even before I bought mine I could swear it had mediocre reviews dues to lack of ease of setup. I told myself I could struggle through and get it working which I did.I read the reviews about poor performance skipping video and audio/video being out of sync. Told myself well we have 100 down 50 something up. Shouldn’t be an issue. We still have consistently had choppiness issues since day one, and I swear it seems like it’s gotten worse since the ads have been forced down out throats. Whether this is a function of the plugin that I was forced to install or the bandwidth used to deliver the ads, I can’t say for sure, but I’ve tried three browsers on mac and PC and they all perform worse now with continued choppiness even with an internet connection that used to be able to run NORAD.We also see increased playback issues with nationally televised events as opposed to local content – not always with speed and motion like games – which is counter-intuitive to claims that they only use your internet to make an initial handshake. Also doesn’t make sense why I see ads every time I hover over the remote if it’s only doing the initial handshake – how would it know or care to know if I’m clicking on the remote if the handshake is the only thing it’s supposed to use their servers for?? Something else is going on behind the scenes that’s using bandwidth or sending it out over their servers. And yes – I did just say that every time I hover over or click on the remote, a banner ad shows up on the bottom and on the right. This is happening right now in firefox 31.0 – which is the most stable browser I’ve found for playback so far – definitely not a slam whatsoever against Mozilla. It’s just incredibly frustrating. A company takes a product that worked perfectly well and decides to milk the loyal customers with a blatant money grab. It was bad enough that they discontinued support for older models forcing people who had bought their product to buy new ones for no reason other than they were forced to. But that was 5 or so years ago. This is 2015. I can stream my cable content to pretty much any device anywhere on the planet I travel to. DVR’d content too, which I couldn’t do a year ago when I bought this particular model of slingbox. My guess is that sling sees the writing on the wall and they’re trying to cash in on their existing would-be loyal customer base before finally filing for bankruptcy and laying off their workforce – using this money grab to pad some golden parachutes. I could be wrong but this is the taste I’m left with after my recent interactions with this company, their hardware and their business practices.Beware of buying this or any sling product. I personally am concerned that I’m going to be left with a 200.00 doorstop when they finally do go out of business, shutting down whatever servers and infrastructure we’re now forced to use to connect to devices that we could simply hit via IP address before. Seriously. They do not have a good track record based on leaving owners of older devices hanging with the rolllout of new viewing methods. This company should be required by law to release a direct connect viewing method for all of their devices that circumvents their infrastructure, and will work in the even of their server’s in-availability should that ever take place – or for users who simply wish to connect directly to the hardware that they’ve already paid hundreds of dollars for and to opt out of the ad content. Which was available on earlier slingbox models. Sounds simple. Also, no HDMI support on this box – not sure about all of them but I’ve read it’s because they won’t pay to license the HDMI standard – could be misinformed but it’s what I’ve read all over. You’ll need to run composite to your box.Very laggy too just clicking on the virtual remote which is connected to the included IR blaster three rooms away from me via sling.Just relaunched it and now sling’s telling me I’m running low on disk space. I have 53GB remaining on a 250gb drive. I mean come on. How many resources do you need to stream video. Youtube does it all day to millions of users with almost zero issues.Look at what’s currently available to you through your internet/cable provider. You might be duplicating services at a pretty significant cost when you don’t really need to.Hope this helps!!Read more 11 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 610 reviewsWrite a customer review Set up an Amazon Giveaway Amazon Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.
